What is a sound bath meditation?

A sound bath meditation is an immersive sound journey. During the practice, you are enveloped in the soothing sounds and vibrations, created by an array of mindfully curated ancient and modern instruments. The purpose of sound meditation is to create a gentle, yet powerful experience that relaxes the body, clears the mind and heightens your meditation practice by helping to bring your attention to the present. It is called a ‘bath’ because the sound waves wash over you, as you relax and enjoy the melodic journey. The harmonics and frequencies effortlessly lull your mind into a meditative state, while the vibrations revitalise the body and help release tension.

I play premium Crystal Tones Alchemy singing bowls made from crystals, fine gemstones and precious metals, such as 24 carat gold, silver and platinum, which are heated and blended with highest quality (99.992% pure) clear quartz. The gentle and angelic humming sounds of the bowls are supported by the gong and monolina. Soft percussion instruments, which can include drums and chimes also create a tender cocoon.

A sound bath is safe for most people to try. It can be easier than other meditative practices because it does not require a lot of discipline or patience to learn - all you need to do is listen. Keep in mind that sound baths are not a replacement for medication or therapy with a licensed health provider when treating anxiety or depression. However, since relaxation is the main outcome of this practice, it can be a beneficial complementary treatment.

What to expect during a sound bath meditation

The optimal brainwave frequency for relaxation is between alpha (relaxed state) and theta (deep meditation and light sleep state), where we are conscious of our surroundings, yet feel deeply relaxed and in control of our thoughts and feelings. The Alchemy Crystal singing bowls help transition you from beta to theta brainwave states during your sound meditation.

This practice helps to activate the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), which is key in relaxation. When the Alchemy Crystal bowl is played, the harmonic and pure tones affect your energy centres for meditation and balancing. Overall, it improves the environment of natural homeostasis within the body, allowing the body's natural ability to ease itself of limitations such as chronic pain, fatigue, stress, anxiety and more.

Each sound bath experience is unique because we fluctuate each day and moment on an emotional, vibrational and cellular level. Some examples of reported experiences include seeing vibrant colors, remembering old memories, falling asleep, and feeling emotional (such as happiness, sadness, frustration and/or anger).

You are encouraged to acknowledge the thoughts and sensations as they arise, to release anything that is no longer serving you (i.e. thoughts, emotions, behaviours, patterns) and to express openly. You will be held in a private, safe and supportive space to do so.

The benefits of sound bath meditation

Modern science continues to unveil the many benefits of meditation and sound as complimentary practices to help achieve physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. There may be instances during a sound bath meditation, where you do not experience any of the sensations listed above. Know that you have benefitted at a neurological and cellular level ~ which due to their subtle nature, may take time and consistency of practise before you begin to notice. The reported benefits include, but are not limited to:

  1. Decreased levels of depression, stress, tension and anxiety;

  2. Improved feelings of calm and restful sleep;

  3. Heightened focus and clarity of thought;

  4. Increased creativity, productivity and innovation; and

  5. Expanded emotional awareness and resilience.

I am grateful for the opportunity to share this practice with you.
